The Hay River Museum Society is looking for an enthusiastic, community-minded individual to join our team as Museum Manager – Operations & Community Programs. This is an opportunity to grow into a leadership role while helping preserve and share the stories, culture, and heritage that make Hay River unique.
As the face of the museum, you will help create memorable visitor experiences, support community programming, and contribute to one of Hay River’s most valued cultural spaces. Reporting directly to the Hay River Museum Society Board, the successful candidate will complete the remainder of the 2026 season and continue in the role for future operating seasons.
What You Will Do
Museum Leadership
- Work closely with the Museum Society Board to support strategic initiatives and community programming.
- Attend Board meetings and provide regular verbal and written updates on museum activities and operations.
- Help guide the ongoing growth and success of the museum.
Create Outstanding Visitor Experiences
Welcome visitors and share the rich history of Hay River and the surrounding region.
- Provide engaging information about exhibits, collections, and local heritage.
- Facilitate museum art activities and promote the use of the museum’s two community libraries.
Support Community Events
- Help organize and coordinate community events, educational presentations, performances, and seasonal celebrations.
- Support public programming that encourages community participation and visitor engagement.
- Help create memorable experiences for residents and visitors alike.
Manage Daily Operations
Oversee the day-to-day operation of museum facilities, grounds, exhibits, outdoor activity areas, and the Ice Cream Shack.
- Recruit, supervise, train, and support seasonal staff.
- Coordinate contractors, respond to public inquiries, and assist with administrative and financial functions.
Knowledge and Experience Considered Assets
- A knowledge of local history, culture, tourism, heritage preservation, Northern communities, and Indigenous cultures and histories.
- Experience working with the public, volunteers, customers, visitors, or community groups.
- Experience gained by working in the field of tourism, cultural, recreation, community, or non-profit environment.
- Experience in the areas of supervision, administration, budgeting, bookkeeping, grant writing, fundraising, or project management.
Skills and Abilities
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Ability to organize and manage your time effectively.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, build positive relationships, and grow into a leadership role.
- Ability to organize events, programs, projects, or community activities.

Position Details
Schedule: Wednesday through Sunday, approximately five months per year (May–September), with occasional evening work for special events.
Compensation: Starting at $35.00+ per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
Hours: 40 hours per week.
